Milano Fiera / New Trade Fair Milano, Italy

New Milan Trade Fair is a great architectural project for the territory. Its dimension renders it one of the major complex nowadays on building in Europe. It is part of the recovery of wide urban spaces, of the territory which goes beyond the borders of the city itself. Areas which aspire to become “geography”, landscape.

The abandoned areas and suburbs call for important interventions. The critical mass of the intervention, more than 2 millions squared meters and more than half million of construction, are the starting point. I thought about a unitary complex, of simple geometry. The project of the New Milan Trade Fair is characterized by the great central axis: the great transparent coverage modifies spaces and represents the continuity of the vision. The service centre, the offices, the convention area, are the fulcrum of the entire system: transition from honour “entrance” to central axis.

On the sides, the pavilions, with big facades made of reflecting metal (of more than 200 m. for the two-level pavilions), bring back the life and the images of the pathway.
The entrances are signal and event. Architecture is “contaminated” art: she lives of other universes, she observes modifications and changes, she attempts to synthetically represent what happens. Architecture is not only inspired by architecture, but she tends to comprehend and to talk to everyone. In a moment of very few “visions” looking to the future, and the mere running of quotidian life and of existence, this project seems to be part of the European more dynamic scenery. It exists a demand and a desire of architecture, of emotions.

This project is ambitious. It is addressed to future visitors, and, firstly, it tries to pay much attention to people who will work and spend their days inside the New Milan Trade Fair.
Our country resumes a route which has been interrupted for more than 30 years, thus putting under construction one of the most important international trade fair complex.
The New Trade Fair is an important project for the region of Milan. It’s dimensions make it one of the biggest buildings in Europe. It is part of the wide structure of suburban space which is located in the outskirts of the city. This space wants to become “geography” – wants to be “landscape”.
The project is characterized by a central axis. The transparent covering of the axis modifies space and represents the vision of continuity. Service centre, offices and exhibition areas are scattered within the vast site area.
The pavilions are situated on both sides of the axis. Their reflective facades coated with steel panels mirror the image of people walking. The main entrances to the complex are sculpturally designed to the two ends of the path. The architecture can be described as “contaminated” art: it survives by relaying on other “universes”, it controls movement and changes, it tries to represent what’s going on. Architecture is not only inspired by architecture, but tends to relate to every single person. In a situation with very few visions for the future, this projects makes up a dynamic sceneries. Obviously there is a demand for architecture, a demand for emotion.

Shenzhen Guosen Securities Tower

Guosen Securities Tower in Shenzhen by Studio Fuksas
This skyscraper with a zig-zag channel cut into the facade is the winning design by Italian architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas in a competition to design a new office building for Shenzhen.

Shenzhen Guosen Securities Tower by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas
Lobbys, public spaces and gardens will be arranged along this diagonal void, which will also form a 200 metre-high atrium for the building’s entrance hall.
Shenzhen Guosen Securities Tower by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas
Called Shenzhen Guosen Securities Tower, the glazed building will be 200 metres tall, incorporating 68,000 square metres of office space and retail units up to the first floor.

Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas won the “International Schematic Design Competition of Shenzhen Guosen Securities Tower”
After the Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport Terminal 3 won by Studio Fuksas in March 2008, on October 18th 2010 Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas won the “International Schematic Design Competition of Shenzhen Guosen Securities Tower”. The jury meeting for the competition, Sir Peter Cook was the chairman of the jury, have discussed deeply on the 8 submissions under the supervision of the representative from Land and Resources Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, by secret ballot, the final result of this jury is as follows:
  • The 1st Prize: Italy MASSIMILIANO AND DORIANA FUKSAS DESIGN SRL + Shenzhen General Institute of Architectural Design and Research (Consortium)
  • The 2nd Prize: Rocco Design Limited + Guangzhou Han Jing Engineering Co.,+RBS Architecture Engineer Design Associate + Guangdong Mingdu Design Co. Ltd (Consortium)
  • The 3rd Prize: COOP HIMMELB (L) AU +Shenzhen Huasen Architectural & Engineering Design Consultant Ltd. (Consortium)
  • Between teams invited: MVRDV + Shenzhen Zhubo Design Co. Ltd
The project by Studio Fuksas is born from the intention to create a new concept of vertical public space for the tower. A three-dimensional void will be arranged along the facades giving a dynamic image to the building and creating different public scenarios for the offices. The design of the void shape explores the relation between the podium and the vertical section of the tower with diagonals spaces and fluxes that create a vertical tension in the full height of the tower.
Guosen Tower’s distinctive façade atrium, with an energizing and dynamic form, will establish a new symbol for the CBD skyline. With its 200m height space, the tridimensional atrium will be the highest lobby in the Shenzhen. The public spaces, lobbies and Sky-Gardens are interconnected along the tridimensional void of the atrium creating a stream of light, images and activity. The building itself will be symbolically open to the city along the great façade atrium.
Guosen Tower design integrates the values of connectivity and trade fluxes of Shenzhen CBD into an innovative vision for a XXI century tower. Integrated in the complex skyline of the CDB, Guosen tower will respond with a pure external glass volume. All the complexity happens in the internal network of public spaces that are placed strategically in the facades taking advantage of the views and visibility according to the urban context. The upper levels of the building include the office complex of Guosen Securities, with an access highlighted by a triple height sky lobby. The very top levels are dedicated to the executive’s offices, including a sky garden and club room levels that offer a spectacular 360-degree panorama across Shenzhen CBD. Guosen Tower will be the first ecological tall building in Shenzhen with an instantly recognizable image into the city skyline.

Armani 5th Avenue by Massimiliano & Doriana

The Armani 5th Avenue store in New York City, designed by Massimiliano & Doriana Fuksas Architects, opened last week.

The central feature of the 4-storey store is a sculptural steel staircase.

Here’s some info from Georgio Armani:
–
GIORGIO ARMANI OPENS ARMANI/5th AVENUE IN NEW YORK
On February 18, 2009 Giorgio Armani comes to the most celebrated street in New York. Fifth Avenue has been the focal point of many contemporary and historical events, and has featured in novels such as Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence, and countless films in which its most famous buildings such as the Empire State Building or the New York Public Library have played a major part. As for the museums, there are so many that the section that fronts Central Park is known as Museum Mile.
l1000173.jpg
“A really exciting challenge – that is how I would describe our new concept store, Armani/5th Avenue in New York. It is a special project requiring a degree of courage, as it brings together in one space different elements such as Armani Jeans and Emporio Armani side by side with Giorgio Armani. I was determined to send out a clear message of change, interpreting the current trend for mixing genres, juxtaposing items in different price brackets. You could say that this is a provocative move – uniting in the same place and with the same furnishings, without visible boundaries, the various collections that combine to form the entire Armani universe.

l1000168.jpg
This freedom of expression defines for me the spirit of Fifth Avenue: a prestigious shopping destination, of course, but one that is less exclusive in character than comparable addresses, with a democratic mood which I am certain represents the future. I worked on the creation of this store with Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas, whose hugely respected architectural practice is known for bringing a precisely judged sense of glamour to clothing stores.

This is the third project we have jointly accomplished, following on from Armani/Chater House in Hong Kong and Armani/Ginza Tower in Tokyo, and significantly all three offer totally distinctive environments, each different from the other, because I contend that identical retail spaces, monolithic and repetitive, belong in the past and cannot match the experience offered by a totally original store which introduces the public to the aesthetic excitement of fine contemporary architecture.“
-    Giorgio Armani

l1000156.jpg
ARMANI/5th AVENUE
On this avenue, that combines historical significance with an ultra modern, vibrant and pulsating buzz, at the intersection with 56th Street, Armani/5th Avenue is revealed as a neatly defined and light building completely clad in glass – 164 feet long and 45 feet high (50 meters long and 14 meters high). Spread over 4 floors, one of which is the basement, the store covers a total area of 43,000 square feet (4,000 square meters); the retail area covers approximately 30,000 square feet (2800 square meters) of which 5200 (480 square meters) is occupied by the Bar and Restaurant.
fuksas_armani_100.jpg
Form and structure
Giorgio Armani has selected the architects Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas and has actively collaborated with them throughout this building, conceived as a single, fluid space providing uninterrupted intercommunication, brought together by the impact of the vortex of the staircase.
l1000115.jpg
The heart of the building is, in fact, epitomized by the staircase, a structure in rolled calender steel, made in Italy, and clad in plastic material that highlights its exceptional sculptural presence, an entity that is almost impossible to convey in terms of any normal geometric shape.
l1000114.jpg
The sense of movement
An interplay of slightly overlapping bands distinguishes the structure of the building and leads to the upper floors, gliding over the vertical surface of the interior.
l1000111.jpg
Each floor opens out into an ever-changing pattern of curved surfaces that add visual interest to the light putty-colored walls. Whereas the colors are pure and constant – beige for the walls, black for the floors and ceilings, and metal – the shine, the glossy look, the use of different materials, the reflections from the lighting – all suggest movement, subdued atmosphere and color. Special attention has been paid to the lighting, which defines and emphasizes the curvature of the walls and spaces. The use of curves is a constant feature throughout the interior design, and is evident in every aspect of the store, from the display units to the hanging units, from desks to armchairs.
l1000102.jpg
The internal layout
This fabulous concept store brings together the world of Armani throughout. For signature shopping, there is no better place to start than on the ground floor for Emporio Armani and Giorgio Armani accessories as well as the Emporio Armani collection for women. Down in the basement is the realm of those who favor a casual style of dress: Armani Jeans, EA7 – the sports line that includes specialized clothing and equipment, Emporio Armani Underwear and the Swimwear range.
l1000097.jpg
The further up the building, the more selective and refined the choice of products become. On the first floor, the Cosmetic area beckons, with its ultra sophisticated range of products with Crema Nera and the more sophisticated perfumes, followed by the area dedicated to Giorgio Armani and Emporio Armani shoes. From here it is a short hop to Giorgio Armani, Fashion, Classics and Eveningwear, all for women. Following the pathway of the staircase and descending a few steps, the space is dedicated exclusively to the fashion section of the Emporio Armani line for men.
l1000070.jpg
On the second floor, Emporio Armani, Giorgio Armani for men and Emporio Armani and Giorgio Armani shoes for men are displayed. This floor also houses Armani/Casa, offering a choice of objets; the space successfully evokes the huge Armani/Casa store in Soho. Nearby there is a small area dedicated to the delights of Armani/Dolci, the first retail area for this collection of delicacies to open in the USA. On both the first and second level, two specific spaces have been conceived and reserved for a private VIP fitting room.
l1000024.jpg
From the Armani/Restaurant on the top floor, a fabulous view can be enjoyed – through an amber-colored filter – down Fifth Avenue, with Central Park in the background. A line of lighting on the ground leads to the entrance to the restaurant, emphasizing the sensuous curve of the wall. A virtual curtain is raised as you pass through it… the show begins, making the customer the star.
fuksas_armani_101.jpg
Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas said: “The building that incorporates Armani/5th Avenue holds a very important place in the history of architecture because its façade is one of the first examples of the “International Style”. When one is dealing with such a cultural milestone, one must always bear in mind that the exterior is totally New York, while the interior should have its own identity. A reflection of the flair and aesthetic values that define the Giorgio Armani style.
l1000117.jpg
The grand staircase is the focal point, an exciting sculptural feature which connects all the different levels that accommodate the Armani universe range by range. Innovative in both layout and content, Armani/5th Avenue is the first concept store in which all the Armani products are presented in a single space, where the same design has been adopted throughout: the subtle colours and restrained shapes emphasise the value of the product.”
l1000124.jpg
The Armani/5th Avenue Special Collections
To celebrate the opening of this new concept store, Giorgio Armani has created a range of special accessories – a capsule collection that includes pieces from both Giorgio Armani and Emporio Armani, only available for sale in the 5th Avenue store. Notice the logo – all the Giorgio Armani items feature a black label inscribed “Armani/5th Avenue – Limited Edition.” Meanwhile the Emporio Armani items have the following inscription: “Armani/5th Avenue – Exclusive Edition.”
l1000099.jpg
The Giorgio Armani collections will include a jacket in blue python skin, a crew neck cashmere pullover, jeans, eyewear with a metal tag, accessories in crocodile nappa, and watches. The Emporio Armani collections present an ultra urban and international look that reflects the vibrant energy so typical of Manhattan.

Shenzhen International Airport Terminal 3 by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas

courtesystudiofuksas1sq.jpg
Italian architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas have won the competition to design a new terminal at Shenzen Bao’an International Airport in China.

fcolarossi2sq.jpg
The 400,000 square metre terminal will be built in three phases, with the final elements completed in 2035.
fcolarossi4sq.jpg
Here’s all the info from the architects:
–
Shenzhen is one of the most important industrial and touristical locations of whole China. Shenzhen is located in the southern portion of the Guangdong Province, on the eastern shore of the Pearl River Delta. Neighbouring the Pearl River Delta and Hong Kong , Shenzhen’s location gives it a geographical advantage for economic development.
courtesystudiofuksas.jpg
Shenzhen International Airport Terminal will be the gateway to the city of Shenzhen. The first and last image an air traveller has of a city are those created by the traveller’s impression of the airport. T3 in Shenzhen International Airport can positively influence the image that international, national business people and tourists have of Shenzhen.
courtesystudiofuksas1.jpg
The master plan for Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport intends to offer world-class transportation services. Achieving this means that Shenzhen airport must be operate at the following levels:
courtesystudiofuksas2.jpg
Globally – T3 at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport must serve as the global aviation gateway between China and the rest of the world.
courtesystudiofuksas3.jpg
Nationally – as the fourth largest following Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou in China, Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport is a trunk of domestic flights and hub of national flights. Enhancement of transfer services between international and domestici flights will improve the distribution of wealth among all Chinese cities.
courtesystudiofuksas4.jpg
Regionally – Currently, there are more than 40 cities with populations of over one million within 3.5 hours flying time of Shenzhen. This makes Shenzhen an excellent location for a regional hub. Passengers travelling from neighboring cities could fly to Shenzhen to connect with long distance global flights or flights to other Asian cities.
courtesystudiofuksas5.jpg
In construction terms, its design optimises the performance of materials selected on the basis of local availability, functionality, application of local skills, and low cost procurement. Remarkably, it will have been designed and built in just few years. For the complete of T3 Shenzhen Bao’an Airport there are three phases.
courtesystudiofuksas7.jpg
Phase 1 (in 2015)
Major facilities in Phase 1 will include the unit terminal with 63 contact gates, the first stage of the APM, traffic system, parking place, landscape, and shopping centre. Train service for APM will not be available until the complete of Phase 2.
fcolarossi1.jpg
Phase 2 (in 2025)
Expansion after Phase 1 will occur based on masterplan. During Phase 2, the first remote passenger concourse will be constructed to add gates and the satellite terminal with rail stations will be operational. This will require expansion of the APM.
fcolarossi.jpg
Phase 3 (in 2035)
Development of the airport’s west side will continue until about 2035 when T3 Shenzhen International Airport will be fully constructed. Phase 3 continues the demand driven development process. The satellite terminal will again undergo expansion and more remote concourse will be added during this decade. And also there will be expansion of Terminal head house. The volume of extension of Terminal head house is going to be glass facade with glass roof so that the extension of building can have continuity in terms of construction material.
fcolarossi2.jpg
Consequently this way of extension can have merits not only for the aesthetic reason but also for construction. Designed for maximum flexibility to cope with the unpredictable nature of the aviation industry, like its predecessors, it aims to resolve the complexities of modern air travel, combining spatial clarity with high service standards.
fcolarossi3.jpg
Terminal and Concourse
The passenger terminal and concourse constitute the major portion of the passengers’ perception of an airport. Factors which affect passengers’ impressions include processing times, walking distances, ease of orientation, crowding, and availability of desired amenities. Each of these has been carefully considered in developing the concept for the passenger terminal and concourse.
fcolarossi6.jpg
The terminal is open to views to the outside and planned under a single unifying roof canopy. Natural light is coming through the skin that is double skins with pattern. The skin avoids direct sunlight to reduce energy consumption and creates elegant atmosphere. It makes the air travellers have marvellous impression with comfort.
fcolarossi4.jpg
Terminal
The plaza provides access to the baggage handling, departures and arrivals hall on the ground floor as well as to the cafes and restaurants, offices and facilities for business meetings. Void in the grand departure hall establishes not only a visual link between different levels but also the passages of natural light to the other levels.
fcolarossi5.jpg
The grand departure hall has vast plaza with check-in counters that is brighten elegantly by the diffusion of light from the roof. This provides a pleasant waiting space with check-in desks, an information counter, car rental companies and airline counters. The mega-trusses are used to have this vast closed plaza.
Travellers arrives at the terminal at 14m through the car way. The canopy of the airport can make them feel welcome with light effect that is created by double slit of canopy. After check-in two types of travellers, international and domestic departure is going to divide vertically. For international departure travellers has to go down using escalators while domestic travellers go to security area(CIQ) at 14m.
Concourse
Concourse area is one of key function area at the airport. Concourse area at T3 Shenzhen International Airport is composed with three levels. Each level is destined for independent function: departure, arrival, and services.
The form of the concourse is simple, but elegant. It is also for the consideration of expansion of the airport in the future.
The concept of interior space is fluid. There are two different spatial characters in concourse space. One is movement, the other is pause. Retails and waiting lounges will be islands for pause. Especially retails are key-tenant in concourse space, not only for the management of airport but also for the impression of airport with high-services. Retails and waiting lounges seem to be made naturally following spatial fluid.
The inner skin is made of very fine net. The movement of this skin gives concourse space elegant atmosphere. When we see the concourse from 14m level it will be marvellous space.

Church in Foligno by Massimiliano

squ_mrm0139.jpg
Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas Architects have completed a church in Foligno, Italy.
_mrm0030.jpg
The new building will be opened on Friday.
_mrm0094.jpg
Photographs by Moreno Maggi.
Here’s some more information from Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas Architects:
–
Friday 24 April at 11 a.m. will be presented the new Church in Foligno, based on plans by Architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas.
The project was won in 2001 after a national competition organized by the Conferenza Episcopale Italiana for the construction of new churches, the jury gave the following reasons for choosing, “as a sign of innovation that meets the latest international research, becoming a symbol of rebirth for the city after the earthquake. ”
_mrm0120.jpg
The new parish designed by Fuksas Architects, is a monolith of pure geometry, absolute, in a tin box. There are two main architectural elements that are identified with the functions of the religious center, the first element, the Church building, consists of two rectangules inserted into one another, the second element, also rectangular shape but long and low, is home to the Sacristy, the Pastoral Ministry of Local and Casa Canonica. A third an architectural element, smaller, combining the latter two. Spirituality and meditation joined together in a play of natural light entering horizontally and vertically, drawing a dialogue with the sky.
_mrm0119.jpg
“The suspension of a volume within another. Seeing through concrete heaven, from outside, to inside, to outside. Massimiliano Fuksas
Enzo Cucchi, prepared for the outside of the church sculpture “Stele-Cross” in cement and white marble from Carrara. A tall totem 13.50 meter itself becomes architectural element. Mimmo Paladino created the 14 Stations of the Cross and Fuksas Design designed furniture and
lighting.

At the presentation of the Church, on the initiative and the City and Diocese of Foligno, and the organization of OICOS REFLECTIONS, will be held on April 24-26, 2009, the event “In the sacred architecture – Three days with the architecture of Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas “.
