Today we review one of my favorite projects of recent years, designed by one of the most innovative architectural studies at the time, the Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
PJSC. Asymptote was commissioned to design the buildings and their surroundings in a tight race led to an opening date of October 30, 2009 to coincide with the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The Yas hotel, a 500-room, 85,000-square-meter structure made up of two twelve story hotel towers linked together by a monocoque steel and glass bridge A Grid Shell structure that both cross above and over the Yas Marina Circuit F1 race track. It is the first new hotel in the world to be built over an F1 race circuit. The hotel’s exterior surface is designed as an environmentally responsive skin that by day reflects the sky and surroundings and by night is lit by a full color changing LED lighting system that incorporate video feeds that are transmitted over the entire surface of the building.
Asymptote created and conceived of the building as an architectural landmark embodying key influences and local and global inspirations ranging from the aesthetics and forms associated with speed and spectacle to the artistry and geometries that form the basis of ancient Islamic art and craft traditions. Of architectural and engineering significance is the main feature of the hotelʼs design; a 217-meter expanse of sweeping, curvilinear glass and steel covering that is made up of 5,800 pivoting diamond-shaped glass panels. This Grid-Shell component is a key aspect of the overall architectural design and significance of the project by producing an atmospheric-like veil visible from miles away.
The two hotel towers, one being set within the race circuit, and another placed in the Marina itself, are physically linked by a sculpted steel monocoque bridge construction that passes above the Formula 1 track. The bridge along with the Grid-Shell visually connect and fuse the entire Yas Hotel complex. The Yas Hotel was designed by Asymptote to become a significant and important landmark for Abu Dhabi. The pixelated lighting design by Asymptote in collaboration with Arup Lighting creates a dynamic appearance at night, with colours flowing smoothly across the double curved surface. says in a press release…
“The hotel embodies various key influences and inspirations ranging from the aesthetics and forms associated with speed, movement and spectacle to the artistry and geometries forming the basis of ancient Islamic art and craft traditions, a perfect union and harmonious interplay between elegance and spectacle. The search here was inspired by what one could call the ‘art’ and poetics of motor racing, specifically Formula 1, coupled with the making of a place that celebrates Abu Dhabi as a cultural and technological tour de force.”
Hani Rashid describes the design of the building and its architecture as "a perfect union and harmonious interaction of elegance and entertainment. The search here was inspired by what we might call the" art "and the poetics of motor racing, in particular the Formula 1 together with the development of a place that welcomes Abu Dhabi as a cultural tour and technological strength. "
The Yas Hotel is one of the main architectural features of the ambitious development of 36 billion dollars and accompanying Yas Marina Formula 1 circuit raceway, also near completion. founders and partners of Asymptote, Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture provided an architectural landmark that incorporates several key influences and inspirations that range from aesthetics and forms associated with the speed, movement and entertainment for art and geometries that form the basis of the former Islamic art and craft traditions.
The Yas Hotel has 500 rooms, the complex of 85,000 square meters, built by Aldar Properties
Major architectural and engineering is the main feature of project design, an extension of 217 meters from the radical forms, curved steel and 5,800 glass panels that rotate in a diamond. Grid-Shell This component provides the building of an architecture composed of a similar atmospheric veil that contains two towers and a connecting bridge built as a steel unibody carved object that passes over the Formula 1 circuit that winds its way through building complex. Grid-Shell and fuses visually connects the whole complex, together with optical effects and spectral reflections play against the sky around the sea and the desert landscape. Architecture as a whole "done" as well as environmentally sensitive solution, as well as an architecture of spectacle and event. The entire composition as a masterpiece of visual and tectonically project responds to its environment to create a distinct and powerful sense of place, as well as an impressive backdrop for Formula 1 and other events that the building will hold. The Hotel Yas is designed to be an important destination landmark on the island of Yas in Abu Dhabi and the UAE in general.
The Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi is a luxurious hotel where they care to detail the distribution, the decor and ambience of each part and each stay, whether for public use (hall, restaurants, halls, etc. ..) or private (room).
The decor, as you can see in the pictures is quite minimalist. Very spacious, minimalist and uncluttered environment where white and oil is king as opposed to black and on rare occasions in various shades to brown.
It has several restaurants and we can each enjoy a type of setting and decoration. We can choose depending on our tastes, companions to relocate or our mood.
In addition also has a terrace with a pool that reminded me a bit like Ibiza but perhaps a bit modernized.
Another detail I like is that they have taken advantage of good sunlight to illuminate the hotel because they have large windows on all walls of Yas Hotel

About the hotel there is a network composed of 5,000 LEDs that light up in various colors that are rotating slowly or are capable of displaying video images and low resolution.
