Los Angeles-based practice EMERGENT Tom Wiscombe has won the competition for the new Shenyang Sports and Civic Center Arena 2013 National Games in northeastern China. The installation of 123,000 square meters combines sports civic center, a taekwondo national games room and a swimming stadium in an exciting lightweight ETFE structure bubble dress.
Description of project :
The site for this project is in the heart of the city of Shenyang. Next to Zhongshan Park, is a connector between natural and urban life in the city, making it a perfect place for a sports complex and National Games Arena. The facility has a total constructed area of 123,000 square meters.
The National Games Arena is located on the western edge of the page - an emblematic figure in the context relaxed sports landscape. This building is a symbol of the Games and the new state of Shenyang as a top-ten provincial capital in China and the international city. The architecture is based on the crystal patterns found in nature at all scales. The design features large windows of the bubble membrane facing the park and the city.
The pattern extends the windows on the facades of the building panel metal, erupting as areas of solar panels on the roof.
Our project is based on creating an artificial landscape for sports while creating an icon for the Games. The roof of the Civic Center and Arena Leisure pool are connected to the continuous landscape, connecting the different sports to the city park with cascading sports fields, roads and open spaces. This landscape has soccer fields, basketball courts, badminton, tennis and volleyball courts at various levels.
STRUCTURE AND MATERIALS
The Recreation Center and Swimming Arenas will be built out of reinforced concrete frame and slab construction for the economy. Some areas, such as swimming pools and tennis game will feature large columns, less space and greater height of the beam. Other spaces are relaxed again at a spacing of 7m x 7m economic network. This column will network all the way through the garage in the basement.
The National Arena games will be constructed of reinforced concrete, concrete walls and steel structure. The long span roof will from deep carved beams which is stabilized by internal armature. These rays also contain mechanical systems of space. The skin of the building will be opaque aluminum panel with thin film solar technology in the areas of the roof. Transparent areas will ETFE bubbles, which is pressurized with air. This system is extremely lightweight compared to glass, and therefore requires a minimal structure to support it. In order to reduce solar gain in summer and heat loss in winter, it is proposed the exchange of patches of transparent ETFE bubbles translucent bubbles consisting of multiple layers of ETFE insulated or aero gel insulation other high performance.
NATIONAL GAMES ARENA BUILDING
The National Games Arena building has its main entrance of the Civic Plaza, but can also be introduced through the sports landscape bridges at various levels. The stadium is designed for 2,000 fixed seats above the mezzanine and 2,000 removable seats below. With the lowest seat removed, massive events is the 40M x 70M spatial and NBA games, Disney on Ice, international conferences, or rock concerts. The functions of other sports in the building, such as basketball, volleyball and badminton courts are arranged in a gym instead of in separate rooms. This also allows for maximum flexibility.
CIVIC CENTER AND ARENA LEISURE POOL
These two buildings were combined into a vibrant multi-story complex where people can participate in intramural sports at all times of the year. Swimming Arena is located at the west end of the complex, located under the waterfall sports landscape. All pools are located within a large open space so it is an unforgettable experience of swimming and urban areas. You can enter either from the south side or the Civic Plaza.
The Leisure Centre is located next to the park, and has entries from the north, west and south. It is organized along a corridor that connects the sides of the page next to a network. Sports activities are in one of four levels, clear groupings to facilitate orientation. Skylights daylight interiors and offer views of the people playing outdoor sports. Ground-level functions such as galleries and restaurants to serve the general public, making the space of a community center as well as a sports center.
